Best restaurants on South Congress Avenue in Austin

South Austin’s main thoroughfare is South Congress Avenue, sandwiched between Travis Heights and Bouldin Creek. This is where crowds of Austinians and tourists come in and out of restaurants, boutiques, and vintage stores, enjoying that direct view of the Texas State Capitol.

When it comes to eating and drinking, everyone knows the long lines at Jo’s Coffee (home to this iconic I Love You So Much mural), Hopdoddy Burger Bar, and Torchy’s Tacos. Putting these establishments aside, Eater presents its neighborhood guide to the Southern Congress.

This guide has places for coffee, breakfast, brunch, tacos, drinks, and even a karaoke spot (hello, Ego’s). There are long-standing establishments like the ideal Magnolia Cafe restaurant, the Continental Music Dive Club, and New York-style Home Slice pizzeria, plus newer openings like the June’s neighborhood wine destination, the cafe filled with pastries. Manana and the new-school barbecue from LeRoy & Lewis.

For the purposes of this map, this guide focuses only on businesses located on or near South Congress Avenue until it reaches Freeways 290 and 71, straddling the line between the Travis Heights and Bouldin Creek neighborhoods. Also check out Eater Austin’s other neighborhood dining guides.

As with all businesses, be sure to call ahead to make sure every restaurant is always open or if there are updates on current offerings and service models as things are constantly changing. Wear a mask and tip well.

Restaurant meals are viewed by health experts as a high risk activity for the unvaccinated; the latest data on the delta variant indicate that it may pose a low to moderate risk for vaccinees, especially in high transmission areas. The latest directive from the CDC is here; find a COVID-19 vaccination site here.
