Misty and Brandon Valdez tied the knot in Clovis, Fresno County on Saturday, but not before Brandon and his groomsmen were tied up – stuck in an elevator.
“As soon as we go to leave and get in the elevator just to get off the third floor, about halfway there – a jolt. We immediately knew something was wrong,” Brandon said.
It happened inside the Best Western Clovis Cole.
Valdez let family and friends know what was going on via text message, but no one wanted to upset the bride.
The priest finally told Misty why her fiancé was late.
Minutes after being trapped, the Clovis Fire Department was called to help rescue the groom and six other people.
“The only thing we could do was laugh at that moment,” Brandon said.
A fun story now, but it also came at a cost.
“It was the most important day of our lives and we missed some of that time that we’re not going to get back,” Misty said.
The couple had to skip family photos at the church before the reception.
They say the hotel management told them the elevator problem was out of their control. But the couple disagree and would like some sort of compensation for the inconvenience.
“I don’t think we were asking for much. At least a reduction, nothing major,” Misty said.
The couple say the hotel offered them a discount on a future stay, but as locals they say they don’t really need or want it.
Overall, the couple are grateful to finally be married — and with a unique story — for better or worse.
