Grand Hotel fire – Isle of Wight Observer News

Firefighters were called to the former Grand Hotel in Sandown on Sunday to tackle a fire that had broken out in a one-story building behind the premises.

Crews from Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin attended the scene around 4 p.m. and extinguished the fire using a main jet, safety jet, two reels and four breathing apparatuses .

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services said the blaze caused 80% of the damage to a one-story building.

Firefighters cushioned the scene and checked hot spots before returning to the station at 5:41 p.m. A police spokesperson said: “We have been informed of this incident by the fire department, but it is not considered suspicious.”

The abandoned hotel was recently described as a “imminent accident” when the IW Observer reported that three children who had explored the site found a badger floating on a “mattress-shaped” object in dirty water at least three feet deep.

IW Observer reader Tina Parsonage said she was shocked that there were no security barriers blocking the entrance to the building, that it was not barricaded and the ceiling was hanging down. Fences at the front of the building have been erected since our report, but access to the rear of the hotel was still possible.
