24-year-old woman from Calcutta who works as a presenter said she was gang raped at a Patna hotel in July, while on her way there to present a program run by an event management company .
According to her complaint, two men, including the owner of the business, allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her if she sounded the alarm.
She returned to Calcutta and filed a complaint with the Jadavpur Police Station in southern Calcutta in July, after which the case was transferred to Patna.
The woman claimed on Sunday that even more than two months after the complaint was filed, Patna police had not made any arrests. She said she still received threatening calls from alleged perpetrators.
Patna Police officers said they were investigating the case and would take action.
“It’s a two month old incident. The case was first registered with the Kolkata police and then moved here. Whatever there is in the FIR, we are looking at it. There are serious allegations of rape. Why shouldn’t they be arrested? But before that, we are carrying out a detailed investigation, ”said Rahul Ambarish, Police Commissioner of Patna City (Center).
The police officer (SHO) of Gandhi Maidan police station in which the hotel is located, denied that “nothing was done” by the police.
“We have sent teams from Patna to Muzaffarpur three times in the past two months. The two accused were at large. Their phones were off. Their last tour was in Muzaffarpur, ”said SHO Ranjit Bats.
Bats, the SHO, said police had examined the CCTV footage and were trying to verify the presenter’s account.
The woman had mentioned in her complaint to the Jadavpur Police Station that she had traveled to Patna during the last week of June to anchor an event.
“The wife of the owner of the event management company categorically told me that my husband should not come with me because they were not able to afford additional expenses. She assured me that she and I would stay on the same floor of the hotel. But when I got to the hotel, I was told she was not there, ”the complainant said on Sunday.
The alleged incident happened early July 3 – hours before she boarded a train home from Patna Junction.
“After the event, the owner came to my room around 1 am to make the payment. When he started to open a bottle of whiskey, I strongly objected and started to scream. Just then another man – a friend of the owner – entered the room and closed the door. I realized they had come prepared, ”she said.
The woman said she tried to pick up the landline receiver in the room, but the men broke the wire. The men would have threatened to kill her if she dared to raise her voice.
“I did my best to resist them, but they overpowered me. After that, they dragged me into the toilet and poured water on me to wipe away all the evidence. One of them put a contraceptive pill in my mouth before accompanying me both to the station to make sure I didn’t sound the alarm, ”she said.
The woman boarded a train at 4:25 am and reached Kolkata in the evening.
The next day, she went to Jadavpur Police Station and filed her complaint.
A senior Lalbazar police officer said they had launched a “zero FIR” under the IPC sections related to gang rape and transferred the case to Patna police.
Zero FIR can be dropped anywhere, regardless of the location of the event.
The woman said she returned to Patna on July 29 to register her statement before a magistrate under section 164 of the CrPC.
“I called the investigator in Patna, who keeps making sure the accused will be arrested. But to my knowledge, nothing has been done. Now the wife of the owner of the event management company is threatening me with serious consequences if I don’t settle the case, ”said the complainant.
