With most industries now fully open after the pandemic, BizAsiaLive.com met Anshul Mehta, the sales manager of the brand new The Gate hotel in London. Mehta faced the biggest challenge to open ahead of the March 2020 lockdown. Despite this, the hotel was one of the few that remained profitable. We told him about the last 18 months.

How does it feel to be fully open after the pandemic?
Business is certainly picking up, but not to pre-pandemic levels. With international and business travel caught in the crossfire of quarantine rules and other COVID-19 restrictions, stays in the UK have become a major driver of the occupancy gains that have emerged since the start of the pandemic.

As vaccination programs continue to expand globally, travel restrictions and new waves of viruses are still affecting many parts of the world, including the UK.

Can you tell us about trading at the Gate during the pandemic?
Gate is a brand new build that opened on February 24, 2020, just before we all entered the national lockdown. We have to adapt very quickly and think outside the box to stimulate activity and sustain it by ensuring that we do not have to close our doors. I have proactive strategies for working with the NHS, scientists working on COVID-19 projects, the local government sector, real estate agencies, relocation agencies, law and insurance firms.

With the strategies in place, we have successfully operated a profitable business during the pandemic. While ensuring the safety of our customers and staff during the pandemic, we provided our best service, which allowed us to reach the property’s number 1 on TripAdvisor out of 2,137 specialty accommodation establishments in London.

Do you feel any obstacles or challenges ahead after the pandemic and how do you plan to overcome them?
As with any new business opening, we were looking to position the Gate in the Market and the luxury lifestyle aparthotel in the market and worked on ramp-up plans. After the pandemic, we paused all of our major planning and business activities due to the pandemic.

Tell us a bit about the hotel, the facilities and the location?
Located in vibrant Spitalfields in London’s East End, The Gate Apartments offers serviced accommodation in the heart of the British capital. Stroll down Brick Lane and stumble upon quirky vintage markets, some of the city’s best curry houses, and the watering Junkyard Golf indoor mini-golf course.
